The establishment of a Center of Research in the field of the high-performance computing is proposed; the Center has to be of interdisciplinary nature, such as the already existing competencies in the proponent University will have the possibility of better integration and coordination and the computing facilities will be remarkably reinforced; the general objective of the project is that of arriving to conditions such that it will be possible to contribute with appropriate research facilities to the development of the knowledge in the field of the supercomputing technologies and concurrent computing systems development by following the network paradigm.Two are the main activities to be performed in the Center:
1- development of applicative software of general interest, i.e. to be used within different disciplinary contests;
2- realization of applicative projects by the different disciplinary groups that adhere to the Center (parallel computing, computational physics, computational chemistry, computational fluid dynamics); the different groups will put their specific competencies and experiencies in the field of high-performance computing, related to each different disciplinary framework.

Research Objectives
In the last years studies performed by several international organizations of remarkable prestige have indicated that the growth and the development of societies in various countries will depend on their ability in facing and solving the so-called big scientific and technological challenges. The big technological challenges can be won mainly if large systems for high-performance computing will be available to a large number of people in the field of research and industry. Many problems that can not be managed by following traditional approaches due to their extreme complexity, can be analyzed with the development of techniques and interpretative models that have to be supported by very large computing systems (billions of operations per second) and novel numerical techniques for the advancement of the knowledge in the fields of management of large databases, definition of new standard in telecommunications, real time forecasting of natural phenomena, advancement in physical sciences, advancement in chemical sciences, advanced technologies in engineering.The proposed research center is willing to be active in these fields of scientific activity, through the computational sciences developed with the use of the most advanced techniques available today, those related to parallel computing and distributed processing, such as powerful supercomputational nodes are connected through high-speed networks.
