Centre for Applied Biology, University of Pavia

Università degli Studi di Pavia
Abstract
This proposal is for a new Centre of Applied Biology at the University of Pavia. It builds on existing strengths in core subjects such as genomics and protein science, on industrial research on protein catalysts and transgenic plants and on medical research on novel disease-causing genes, artificial chromosomes, protein engineering and rational drug design.

The new Centre will enable the University of Pavia to develop a coherent programme of translational research in Applied Biology that builds upon present know-how and intellectual property, ensures efficient translation of University discoveries and fosters a strong link with Italian Industry. Funding is requested through this application for the start-up costs of the Centre and specifically for providing management, core equipment and resources for a competitive Ph D programme.

International Relationship
Academic collaborations

There is a key academic partner in this proposal, namely the CNR Institute in Pavia. Staff at this Institute interact with University members in a variety projects but two research teams at the CNR Institute (headed by Silvano Riva and Daniela Toniolo) participate in full capacity to this proposal as Units B (RNA binding proteins) and Unit K (Disease Genes). Hence these two CNR teams will have access to all new core equipment acquired by the Centre and will participate in the M Phil / Ph D programme. The participation of the CNR Institute to the activities of the Centre on an equal basis with the University is reflected in the offer of two Board seats to CNR scientists.

Industrial partnerships

These are extensive as can be expected from the Research Programme of the Centre (see Section 2.1).

Scientists involved in this proposal have collaborative links with 12 different Industrial partners on a wide range of topics including bacterial chromosomes (Unit A), catalysts (Unit H), diagnostics (Unit N1), therapeutics (Units F and D2), to dialysis membrane technology (Unit D2). The Table also emphasizes the varied nature of such links in the form of Research Grants, Contract Research, Licensing agreements and proposal under discussion for Venture Partnerships.

Research Objectives
Objectives

The broad objectives of the Centre for Applied Biology is to provide a framework which will:

- ensure effective management and develop the Centre into a recognized and established Institution for research in Applied Biology over in the next 3 -5 years

- strengthen existing research by promoting further interactions between the scientists involved and provide access to essential equipment and facilities,

- enable new research in relevant areas (such as computational biology) that will complement exisiting work in related areas and,

- set the foundation for long-term growth of Applied Biology in Pavia through a new international and competitive M Phil/Ph D programme.

In order to achieve the above tasks, the Centre will require flexible and effective decision-making and a suitable legal status (either in the form of a Trust or an Economic Interest Group). A brief description of specific objectives follows below.

Core Staff

It is proposed that two executive staff members be appointed to the Centre: a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and a secretary. The CEO will be in charge of the Centre policy, will coordinate applications for funding for a EU post-doctoral>>>
