Research Objectives
IntroductionThe consciousness of the strategic relevance of the field of nano-technologies is growing in the country, both at an industrial and political level. National laboratories operating in this field are penalized (with respect to USA, Japan and other communitarian countries) because of the delay in starting strongly coordinated activities, with priority technological objectives. Moreover there is a problem of critical mass and of instrumental autonomy. The situation in Lombardy is completely inadequate with respect to the role that this region has to play in Europe. In particular, the frontier field of nanostructured materials and surfaces is still waiting for projects of intra- and inter-university integration, necessary for the development of the required synergies. On the other hand a number of highly qualified laboratories operating in this field has been present for years at Politecnico. Some of these laboratories, in the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry, materials science and technology, metallurgy and electronics, are particularly homogeneous and/or complementary from a cultural, methodological, instrumental point of view, and virtually form an integrated laboratory of great potentialities. It must also be stressed that the specific technological competences, naturally present in an engineering school, favor the priority attainment of objectives of industrial interest, and the start of virtuous processes of industry-university collaboration.
