WIreless mesh Networks for next Generation internet (WING)

CREATE-NET
Abstract
The project aims at fostering the scientific cooperation between CREATE-NET and the Technion through the creation of a top-level international research team in the area of algorithms and protocols for wireless networking, able to stay at the forefront of technological and scientific research through the integration of the different competences owned by the two proposing institutions. This will build on already established links at both the institutional level (Technion is a founding partner of CREATE-NET) as well as at individual researcher’s level (collaborations are ongoing between the research staffs of the two institutions). In order to promote the constitution of such a joint research team and to exploit cross-fertilization between the different expertises, an important and challenging research subject, wireless mesh networks for next generation Internet, has been individuated as the best possible area to ground the project on.
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) [1,2] are expected to play a key role in next generation Internet. By delivering broadband services [3] and providing high-speed backhaul connectivity without the need for deploying a wired infrastructure, WMNs will represent the main door to truly broadband ubiquitous Internet access. Target scenarios range from home broadband access and enterprise networking up to metropolitan area networks.
Compared to other, more conventional network architectures, WMNs offer considerable advantages in terms of>>>

Research Goal
The first, fundamental objective of the project is to strengthen the existing links between the involved research units at CREATE-NET and at the Technion, supporting the creation of a top-level international research team, able to draw from the competences of both institutions to stay at the forefront of the scientific research in wireless networking.
At the research level, the main project target is the development of novel algorithms and protocols for enabling wireless mesh networks as the standard access architecture for next generation Internet.
WMNs consist of two kinds of devices, with different technical specifications and different logical roles: mesh routers and mesh clients. The first ones are powerful devices, with limited mobility, devoted power supply and possibly multi-radio interfaces, which act in a cooperative way to forward packets, providing backhaul connectivity to the Internet. The second ones are simple, usually battery-driven, mobile devices, for which no store-and-forward operations are devised. Even if, in principle, WMNs could interface, through gateway nodes, subnetworks based on different radio technologies (3G, WiFi, IEEE 802.15, WiMAX etc.), we will, in this project, concentrate on mesh networks using the same technology for router-to-router and router-to-client communications. This will be done to gain a deeper insight into the fundamental tradeoffs involved in such architecture, paving the way to extensions able to support>>>
