Micro-Technology Laboratory for Bioelectrochemical Diagnostics and Research

Politecnico di Torino
Abstract
The recent scientific and technological advances in microelectronics, in micro- and nano-technologies, in material and surface science (particularly concerning the interaction between synthetic materials and biologic molecules)and in informaticsin connection with the exeptional developements in the area of genomics and proteomics pave the way to the development of highly innovative methods for DNA, RNA, protein, other biologic molecules and cell analysis, and open new perspectives for the application of molecular diagnostics methods into bio-medical, pharmaceutical and agro-food areas.

In these areas, the market is requiring the availability of integrated and automated processes able to quickly carry out thousands of complex biochemical assays. Present technologies meet clear limitations in satisfying this demand, limitations that also hamper some of the potential application of molecular diagnostics into still unexplored and unexploited fields.

The foundation of a Laboratory representing a real operational join-venture based on the concurrent, multidisciplinary effort of research units carrying on basic research and molecular diagnostics applied to different fields, and of private companies seeking placement in the novel diagnostic biotechnologies market is therefore strategic.

To accomplish this task, saving time and funding, we propose the foundation of a non-centralised Laboratory, representing a coordinated joint-venture>>>

Research Goal
The strategic objective of the proposal is the setting-up of a laboratory which will be competitive at national and international level, developing advanced devices and sensors for genomics, post-genomics and proteomics, to be utilized in high-automation diagnostics in medicine, pharmaco-genomics and agro-industry. Significant improvements will be obtained with respect to existing technologies in sensitivity, cost reduction, speed, automation arrangement and repeatibility. The availability of these devices will extend the fields of application of molecular diagnostics, enlarging an already competitive and vast market.
The Laboratory will be created by the aggregation of research Units, distributed on the national territory, but strongly integrating strategies and research objectives. The Units are both public and private, and contribute different expertise necessary for the design and implementation of devices and processes; they guarantee scientific, excellence consolidated technological platforms and equipment, and proper labwork organization for working successfully on the subjects proposed: from basic research to the design of diagnostic/clinical devices, from the realisation of prototypes to laboratory and industrial transfer.
Short and medium-term, objectives of the laboratory are those described in Part III "Laboratory research objectives" (Ricerche funzionali agli obiettivi del laboratorio) that will be financed by the present proposal. They>>>
