Architectural Construction in Post-war Italy (1945-65). Conservation and Restoration Techniques and Procedures.

Abstract
The aim of this research project is to identify the salient construction characteristics typical of Italian architecture between the reconstruction period following WWII and the economic boom of the mid sixties. The project will also identify a series of guidelines to be employed as operational tools in the restoration of Italian architectural works of this period. This issue is crucial as these works have reached, or are about to reach, their fiftieth year of existence, after which tutelage procedures may be initiated.

The project was conceived to address the lack of knowledge and the operative difficulties that emerge every time that attempts are made to transfer theories and principles to the practical restoration of architectural works, especially in the case of twentieth-century buildings. The difficulties are twofold: on the one hand, the lack of knowledge concerning the construction techniques that were employed (and particularly those adopted for individual, even very famous, works) and, on the other hand, the impossibility of referring to a consolidated practice during the project phase, such as can be done in the restoration of ancient constructions.
The project aims to unite two issues that judging by the first experiences of twentieth-century restoration work appear to be kept separate: knowledge concerning construction work and intervention techniques.

Research Objectives
The general objective of this research project is to provide a specific, operative contribution to the existing body of information as well as to the operational conservation and restoration of post-WWII architecture in Italy. The need to focus our attention on the buildings erected in this short time span is directly related to their figurative and constructional characteristics that clearly distinguish them from preceding and subsequent architecture. This issue is central as these works have reached, or are about to reach, their fiftieth year of existence, after which tutelage procedures may be initiated.
Therefore, the research project has a twofold objective:
1) to recognise the typical elements of architectural construction between 1945 and 1965, from the post-war reconstruction to the economic boom of the mid-sixties, prior to the urban and industrial shift which initiated a new phase of the Italian twentieth century;
2) to elaborate a series of operational guidelines to be employed as a reference tool in restoration projects involving post-war Italian architectural works.
The conservation of modern architecture has recently been moving towards a more decise definition of its themes and objectives.

The theme of the conservation of modern architecture is recent. The available bibliography on the subject is limited. Due to the specific characteristics of Italian architecture, the ampler international biography - concerning individual restoration projects abroad - is only partially useful as an indirect reference.
Operators (planners as well as superintendence authorities), who face a constantly increasing number of restoration projects, strongly feel the lack of a concrete body of thorough reference studies on the procedures to be adopted in the restoration and conservation of Italian twentieth-century architecture.
Although the number of conservation projects that are conceived in a complete and organic are very limited, and the ones that are considered satisfactory from the qualitative profile are even fewer, the available information on concrete restoration projects is slowly increasing. Nonetheless, this information is mostly generic and scantly documented, especially with regard to the various technical-executive aspects.
What does exist is literature on operation techniques concerning construction materials and building elements (especially concerning traditional masonry construction: structural consolidations, facade cleaning, facing blocking systems, plaster and paint treatments, etc.). However, in the case of modern buildings, these techniques have proved to be indifferent to the nature and architectural and building quality of the work. >>>
