Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"Abstract
The research project aims at developing an information model conceived to fulfil, during the implementation and data entry, and to communicate to the final user, in the phase of query, the concept of a specific methodological approach. Such approach is devoted to the critic understanding of monumental and archaeological settings in their urban environment. The prototype to be developed during the project aims at building “reconstruction” models, based on digital libraries of textual and visual sources, such as archaeological enquiries, relevant documents for art history and antiquarianism, collected in archives of the Middle Age and of the early Modern Age and pertaining the cities of Rome, Bologna, Otranto and Taranto (which will be further described in the project of each single Research Unit). The model aims at integrating information to understand in a critical way the selected urban centres: documents, technical drawings, historical and archaeological records, technical and scientific reports (such as restoration reports) will be made available, to testify the evolution of works of art and their diachronic changes in their environmental context. Visual and written documents will be integrated in the system, to testify the evolution of the perception of such monuments, to understand the historical and cultural approach to them, even taking into consideration the setting of monuments in ancient urban centres. The model here presented will allow a critical knowledge >>>

Andrea Carandini Università degli Studi di ROMA "La Sapienza"Research Objectives
The research program, through the activity of each research group for the comprehension of monumental and urban settings and for the technologic research on the indexing, management, evaluation and communication of complex documents, aims at:1) Building digital archives for archival sources of the Middle Ages and of the early modern period, pertaining to the cities of Rome, Bologna, Otranto and Taranto. These archives will contain both alphanumeric data derived from the documents, as well as from the images of the documents themselves, when they are of difficult access for the public because of the state of conservation of the parchments (Bologna unit), or if they concern image-archives.
2) Reconstruction of links between different monumental settings (architectural structures, objects, texts, visual documents), to re-build, in a diachronic perspective, the contexts in which the single elements of the urban environments were inserted and to reconstruct the topographical setting in different historical periods, even by means of virtual reconstructions.
3) Historical reconstruction of cities and urban settings, through archival sources on monuments and archaeological sites, on the basis of the gathered data and their organization and management by means of information systems.
4) Production of an interrelated system between alphanumeric and image-databases, unified by a specifically designed geo-referenced platform (GIS).
5) Online access to >>>
Timescale
24 monthsNational and international background
The research here presented is innovative in its interdisciplinary development, so there are no really comparable projects, but for each field of activity there are existing national and international examples:1) Computer applications for historical sciences: design and development of GIS, and systems for the data management, organisation and indexing
In particular the following experiences can be cited: the Nu.M.E. project (The City in 4 Dimensions, virtual reconstruction of the historical city, Historical Atlas of the City of Bologna, 4 vols., Bologna 1995-1999). Moreover, the experiences carried out by the Scuola Normale of Pisa on “Monumental Settings Information System” with the text and images database of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, on behalf of the International Commission for Preservation of the Leaning Tower and the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro - Rome , supported by a GIS and a website (http://torre.duomo.pisa.it); “Monumenta Rariora”, analysing the critical knowledge of antique statuary thorough electronic managing of printed sources from XVI to XVIII century, for a comparative study of the examined objects (http://mora.cribecu.sns.it); “Lucca e le sue Terre”, a database system related to the territory of Lucca, for the evaluation of cultural events and resources in the Province of Lucca, and the experimental diffusion of the web site contents by means of GSM (www.provincia.lucca.it/luccaterre); “La Fortuna Visiva di Pompei”, an archive >>>
