Description
In this research we will focus on some significant Greek comic authors over the evolution of Comedy. The extant comic production amounts to eleven Aristophanes' comedies, one Menander's comedy (and many other significant parts of his comedies), and some thousand fragments from Doric and Attic comedy: an extremely interesting production from the linguistic, literary, and historical point of view. On the basis both of the main critical editions of Aristophanes and Menander and the well-established and updated edition of the comic fragments edited by R. Kassel and C. Austin, the members of this Research Unit will prepare translations, commentaries, and monographs: they intend to analyse comedies and fragments from the linguistic, theatrical, literary, and historical point of view. In the first part (for a term of one year) they will examine the last two extant comedies of Aristophanes (Ecclesiazusae, Wealth) and some of his fragmentary plays. In the second part (for a term of one year) they will analyse other fragmentary comedies of Aristophanes and the fragments of the most important Greek comic authors of Archaia, Mese, and Nea, such as Cratinus, Pherecrates, Eupolis, Plato, Hermippus, Ephippus and Menander.
