Description
Even though specific studies and essays about the metaphorical and symbolical values of the plants both in the classical world and in the Bible are enjoyable, it remains yet to clarify that the synthesis of the two sectors is fulfilled in the patristic production. The research about the literary images of the vegetable world is, therefore, directed towards the publication of a volume divided into two sections. The first one will deal with the Father's culture about the "plants", presenting a triple background: literary ( biblical and classical), auto-optical, and scientific. The literary background finds its unity both in the scholastic preparation of auctores (Virgilio, Ovidio), which the Christian authors cited by heart, and the influence of the already encoded allegorical Alexandrine tradition. The auto-optical background of the native and formative places influences the differentiation of the depositions. With Girolamo Ambrogio Agostino ( main object of the research) we gravitate around the Eastern, Western and north-African areas. The culture of the scientific environment takes into consideration the therapeutic virtues attributed to the plants, but often the allegorical reading of the biblical text confers the spiritual value of remedium animae to the phytotherapeutic element. The second part of the volume will introduce a detailed record of the plants cited by Fathers, selected on the basis of the correspondence in both biblical and classical texts. The nomenclature of the plants will be documented with an ample iconographic comparative equipment.
