The project of the Catania Research Unit aims at editing‚ by the end of the second year of research‚ a Vocabulary of the alimentary culture in the Gallo-Italic Sicily‚ stressing its peculiar characteristics. To those who want to study its linguistic and cultural aspects‚ this area is very interesting because it has kept for centuries its alloglottic traditions‚ combining them with autonomous developments due to the prolonged contact with the Sicilian dialect and culture.In order to better understand the way in which the alimentary lexicon has structured itself within this area during history‚ the "Vocabolario" will have an onomasiologic planning. This will allow to show the materials under study both on a diatopic and comparative level‚ without leaving out of course sociolinguistic consid-erations.
The aims of the Local Research Unit are therefore: 1) to carry out surveys in San Fratello, Novara di Sicilia, Nicosia and Piazza Armerina‚ in the first year of research, using a questionnaire which was elaborated on purpose within ALS by Ruf-fino-Bernardi (2000); to transcribe the collected data, both in ortographic and phonetic writing; 2) to prearrange the materials, which will be then used in the ALS maps, needed to realize the already mentioned Vocabulary. In relation to single parts of the Questionnaire‚ some additional surveys will be carried out also in Montalbano Elicona and Randazzo, and‚ within the microareas of Nicosia and Piazza Armerina‚ in Sperlinga and Aidone.
