Description
The search unit reviews specialistic reference books, drawing out the information necessary for the identification and classification of latin authors. The collected data are recorded on computer science cards (that replace the paper cards used to the start of the search), organized in well-defined and easily consultable fields, giving rise to archives composed by several thousand files containing information about the authors.
In the next phase the search unit proceeds in the unification of the authors' cards and the transfer on electronic support of the data still on paper cards: all the files deduced from different studies concerning the same author are put together, the form of the name more philologically correct is chosen and all its variants are recorded; by means of a comparison the biographical information and that on the practised literary genres are completed and verified. The data obtained are conserved on electronic support on a single file for each author containing the complete information on him with reference to the studies which the information has been deduced from. The files will contain the following information: a) the name of the author chosen as lemma; b) all the different forms of the names (reported in the lemma and organized in a cross-reference system file to file; c) the dates (birth, death or attestation of literary production); d) the qualifications and the covered charges and for which the authors are known; e) the kinds of their literary production; f) all the sources that have contributed to the formation of the lemma, with the indication of the works that supply biographical, bibliographical or philological indications.
After the data base updating the search unit carries out the print phase and the CD-ROM realisation.
